Patient safety, social responsibility and supporting the NHS

In this unprecedented time of pressure and uncertainty, we are aware how difficult it must be for those who were expecting to commence treatment or investigation. The stress and anxiety experienced routinely during fertility treatment can be overwhelming and even without the added burden of the Covid-19 crisis and delay, the emotional and psychological distress is often heightened by the feeling of having such little control over the outcomes.

We will communicate regularly with all our patients over the coming weeks, keep them informed, ensure they know they can call / email anytime with queries, continue to have phone consultations to plan treatment and that all our patients can access our counselling service for support that will remain free of charge using phone / FaceTime.

Throughout, our stance has been to vigilantly ensure the safety of our patients and staff, reviewing guidance and risk daily, as well as maintain awareness of our wider social responsibility. Once it became clear that the pandemic risk had heightened and social isolation measures were likely to be the only mechanism to minimise the consequences and burden in the NHS, we took the decision to cease any new routine cycle activity beyond the emergency cancer fertility preservation cases.

The evolving guidance from our professional bodies (BFS, ASRM, ESHRE) and regulator (HFEA) supported this stance. Those of us who practice within an appropriate clinical, ethical and socially responsible framework should not need the above guidance to realise this correct thing to do at present. Your safety, and that of all of us has to be the paramount at the present time.

We will stay in regular contact with updates and can assure you that as soon as it is safe to do so and restrictions are lifted we will be able to commence treatments immediately and at a high capacity.

During this time, HCA and those of us within the clinic have been in discussions with NHS England about the best way we can support them. Uniting across the healthcare sector has never been so important. As the pressure on the NHS evolves and builds, so too will the nature of the support we provide and the Lister Fertility Clinic staff are proud to be able to assist with their range of clinical and clerical expertise, be it in early pregnancy care, obstetric care or as need arises. We will of course also be working hard to ensure that we continue to protect and care for our existing patients, and our colleagues.
